are you holding hands, leaning into each other
do you still have something there,
that brought you together 20 years ago
and keep you there, through life's dance
I was troubled the last time we spoke
that your found resonance in a poem I wrote last year
with lines like
when does one stop caring
if the other is hurting
those were mine at that time
I didn't want them to be yours too
when Taylor and Joe called it a daythe whole world sighed
because deep inside despite the everyday upheavals of our own relationships
we want to believe in love forever
in others if not our own
and my heart broke a little to hear you speak
of kids growing and you wondering. what you will do next
of not even knowing what you like
in service of family
you'd lost yourself
and you run things so well
it's easy to forget what you do to get it done
that a human heart beats
and you spoke
of silences, food, and love unappreciated
and I cried with you.though you shed no tears
I cried for both of you whom I love
and love you to love the other
but perhaps
all marriages are the same
shiny outside
and shaky inside
and we pray for ourselves and each other
to find that spark
that magic again
that makes us lean into the other
not just for a photograph
but for life
